I’m all about an easy meal that I can make for my big family of six. I always try to find ways to keep all my recipes nutritious, so anyone can easily add substitutions if needed.
In this delicious recipe, you can use substitute ingredients like dairy-free milk, cheese, and other pasta options.
What’s needed for Hamburger Helper?
1 lb. & ½ ground beef- Using 100% grass-fed ground beef is the way to go!
According to Healthline.com, “Grass-fed beef contains more carotenoids, vitamin E, other antioxidants, and a lot more omega-3 fatty acids than conventional beef.”
3 cups Shredded cheese – I use shredded cheddar in the recipes, but you can use dairy-free, or another cheese you’d like.
4 cups of rotini pasta– I used Banza Chickpea Rotini pasta and because I have a family of 6, I need at least 2 boxes of this pasta. Another great choice for this is dish is Banza’s Elbow Chickpea pasta!
1 & ½ cups of milk– I used organic whole milk, but any milk will do. Dairy or non-dairy!
1 Whole onion– try to chop it up as much as possible
2 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp Tomato paste
Spices: ½ tsp cumin, 1 tsp oregano, 1 tsp chili powder, 1 tsp parsley, salt taste
1 tbsp of oil- I either use avocado oil or olive oil, but you can use any oil you have in hand. This oil is used to cook the meat in the beginning.

Can I substitute milk in Hamburger Helper?
Absolutely, you can substitute milk when you are making homemade hamburger helper. A good substitute for milk includes Coconut milk, Goat milk, Almond milk, and Oat milk.
The dairy-free options are very diverse, but they can alter the taste of your dish. Regardless, you can differently substitute milk when you are making hamburger helper from scratch.
How do I make Hamburger Helper thicker?
You use many types of thickeners when cooking, like cornstarch or all-purpose flour. A more healthy option and my personal go-to is Anthony’s organic arrowroot flour. Arrowroot flour is a plant-based powdery flour that can thicken any dish just like corn starch can.
