Setting Homestead Goals | THE FIRST YEAR

This post is about setting homestead goals for 2021 and inspiring others to do the same.

Yay 2021 is finally here!

I have been waiting for this year to come because this year my family will be moving to start a homestead & farm from scratch.

Lately, I’ve been reading about growing food, raising livestock, beekeeping, and watching videos of others who are doing it all now.

As long as you say your goals or write them out, you might have a shot for them to turn into reality.

The only thing you can do is learn as much as you can throughout this life of self-sufficiency.

So, if you are starting a new journey of homesteading, hopefully, this will give you some inspiration to create first-year homestead goals and just go for it!

2021 Homestead Goals

1. Get to know the land & start prepping a garden

First of all, out of all these homestead goals, this one is number one on my list. Especially that I will be learning to grow in an entirely different growing zone.

It’s going to be hard work, but I’m up for the challenge!

My seed collection is fully stocked and ready to go, thanks to tips that I mentioned in my 12-must know tips on how to choose the right seeds for your garden.

I have big plans for my dream garden. So, stay tuned!

2. Homestead Goals: Learn to preserve as much as possible

All the preservation techniques I plan to tackle are canning, freezing, dehydrating, and air drying. I’m also definitely planning to create a herb drying wall and get multiple freezers… I’m going to need it!

Overall, canning will be the newest thing for me, but  I’m excited to start! By getting the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning book and watching the Kneady Homesteader Youtube canning workshop, I feel like I’m learning so much already.

3. Buy chicks and raise them to become egg layers & meat chickens

I think it is a realistic homestead goal to start with chickens as the first set of livestock to raise.

I’m going to have chickens that will be placed by my garden and meat chickens that will be on pasture.

The dream of having a lot of chickens will finally come to light!

4. Homestead Goals: Save more money (to renovate my dream kitchen)

I will be buying an old home on land, so renovations are inevitable. This process will be documented to show all of you.

My kitchen is everything, so making it functional and just the way I want it is a must!

Overall, a lot of money will need to be saved for any house renovation. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t be able to save as much if I was still in debt. If you’re ready to get out of debt you need to read how I played off $60,000 in just 13 months!

5. Start a compost system & build structures to hold it all

After I look around my land, I will pick a compost location to create a lot, a lot of compost!

Charles downing compost system is what I’m inspiring to do since it’s genius and is well worth the work. If you get excited about compost to comment below!

6. Get to know the new community, farmers markets, & local Apiaries

Getting to know my new community and places like the farmer’s market is very beneficial.  Especially that my family is going to be a working farming family.

Furthermore, I wrote apiaries because I’m planning to become a beekeeper. I want to find a mentor first before I get my first set of bees.

As of now, I am reading The Beekeepers Bible, below is an image of it. This book is amazing, it goes through the history of bees, all things beekeeping, and even honey/beeswax recipes too. I’m learning so much!

If you recommend any beekeeping books let me know in the comments.

In addition to beekeeping, I am excited to implement some of Curtis stone’s strategies to sell at farmers’ markets.

Since reading his book The Urban Farmer and doing additional research I can’t wait to start taking action.

Overall, I think having the support of your community and fellow lovers of growing food is all I can ask for one day.

7. Homestead Goals: Continue to expand library & homesteading tools/skills

As I always say, knowledge is power!

I might just have to do a post about all the books that are helping me through my gardening and homesteading journey. Let me know in the comments if that interests you?

For anyone out there who is thinking of their new homestead goals for 2021, as long as you take it one day at a time you will get there.

Keep learning, dreaming, and believing!

I hope I accomplish my homestead goals and you do too! Let me know in the comments your goals for 2021?
